Are lab diamonds real diamonds?
While lab diamonds are grown in a lab over the course of weeks or month, lab grown diamonds are every bit as real as natural, mined diamonds according to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. In 2018 the FTC declared that “these stones have essentially the same optical, physical, and chemical properties as mined diamonds. Thus, they are diamonds.”
Are lab created diamonds worth anything?
  • One key argument made against lab grown diamonds is that a robust secondary market for these stones does not exist. Basically, lab grown diamonds do not have any significant resale value. There are two counterarguments to this claim:
    • Recently, the GIA officially began grading lab grown diamonds for the first time, which is a major step toward general acceptance within the diamond community. This is one of the strongest signals that lab grown diamonds have gained widespread acceptance. As lab grown diamonds continue growing in popularity, a secondary market for these diamonds will develop.
    • The secondary market for natural diamonds is also difficult to navigate and most sellers take a discount in excess of 30% of the original price of their natural diamond when they go to re-sell. Given that lab grown diamonds are currently priced 60% - 70% lower than natural diamonds, a lab grown diamond may actually be a smarter financial decision.
  • For example, a round 1.5 carat H VS2 natural diamond costs about $10,500 while a lab grown diamond of the same quality costs $3,140. Let’s pretend that the buyer of each diamond eventually wants to sell their diamond to upgrade to a different stone.
  • The natural diamond would recoup about $6,500 for its original $10,500 price tag based on data from Worthy.com: a $4,000 loss.
  • Meanwhile, the lab grown diamond buyer only ever spent $3,140. If they decided to simply lock the lab grown diamond away in a vault, the lab grown buyer would still be $900 better off than the natural diamond buyer (and would still have ownership over their stone).

How are lab grown diamonds made?
  • Laboratory-grown diamonds, also known as man-made diamonds or simply “lab diamonds”, are grown in a highly controlled environment that seeks to replicate the growing process that occurred in nature billions of years ago when the earth was a very different place. Today, scientists have developed two main techniques for creating lab diamonds which we’ll outline further below, namely High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).
  • High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) uses extremely high pressure (about 1.5 million pounds per square inch or the weight of two Empire State Buildings) coupled with incredibly high temperatures (up to 1,500 degrees Celcius or about 25% as hot as the surface of the Sun). The conditions are created using various types of laboratory machinery. By placing a small diamond “seed” and carbon inside this environment of extreme pressure and temperature, the carbon transforms into a diamond (diamond is formed by a special configuration of carbon atoms in nature as well).
  • CVD diamonds begin with diamond seeds that are placed in a vacuum-sealed plasma reactor and exposed to a carbon-rich gas under extreme heat and pressure. The gas is then ionized (a process by which an atom acquires a negative or positive charge by gaining or losing electrons), breaking the molecular bonds so that the carbon atoms are free to attach themselves to the diamond seeds and begin to organize themselves into a larger diamond, layer by layer
How can you tell the difference between a lab grown diamond and a natural diamond
Telling the difference between a natural and a lab grown diamond requires expensive and specialized equipment that most of us would be foolish to purchase. For that reason, the best way to tell if a diamond is natural or lab grown is to look at the diamond’s grading certificate. If a diamond does not have a grading certificate from a reputable organization like the GIA, IGI, or GCAL, you should request that the diamond be certified to ensure it’s authenticity.
